Alex Winter is a self taught New York City based Artist. Winter’s work examines themes including sex, violence, and celebrity. Winter recontextualizes highly stylized photographs into realist oil paintings, referencing found images to create an overarching narrative of American Decay.
Winter creates these images in the lineage of the Old Masters with realistic portraiture using oil on canvas. In doing so he juxtaposes traditional high art media standards with the democratic and disruptive new standard of Internet imagery.
Winter preserves images that would otherwise be fleeting in the digital depths of the infinite scroll; elevating modern user generated content into physical, permanent pieces worthy of in depth study. These ephemeral images are enlarged, examined and then re-rendered in the most traditional and laudatory form of preservation- oil on canvas.
In doing so, Winter aims to open a dialogue about shifting values and The American Decline.
